Invited to a Gruppentermin by the Agentur für Arbeit or Jobcenter? Here’s What to Expect

You receive an invitation from the Agentur für Arbeit (AfA) or Jobcenter for a Gruppentermin.

And your first thought might be:

“Am I going to meet my Berater? Do I need to prepare something? What exactly is going to happen there?”

If you’re expecting a normal appointment with your Berater, you might be surprised.

Most of the time, a Gruppentermin is something quite different.

You Probably Won’t Have a Standard Meeting With Your Berater

A Gruppentermin is usually not a one-to-one appointment.

Instead, you may be invited into a larger, open space where different providers have tables or information stands. You can walk around, speak with them, ask questions, and find out what they offer.

Sometimes there will also be Beraters from the Agentur für Arbeit or Jobcenter walking around the room.

You might even run into your own Berater.

But you might not.

So don’t go into a Gruppentermin expecting that you will necessarily sit down with your Berater and discuss your individual situation.

What Happens When You Arrive?

Usually, your attendance will be checked at the entrance.

This is important because if you received an official invitation, you want to make sure your attendance has been registered.

After that, you can normally move between the different tables and see what is being offered.

You can speak with providers.

You can ask questions.

And you don’t necessarily have to speak with every provider just because they are there.

Think of it more like an information event than your usual appointment.

Who Will You Meet There?

The providers at these events are often offering services in three main areas:

1. Bildungsgutschein

A Bildungsgutschein can allow the Agentur für Arbeit or Jobcenter to fund an approved professional training or further education course.

This can be relevant when additional qualifications could improve your chances of finding work.

There are many different courses and providers, so receiving information about a Bildungsgutschein does not mean you have to immediately choose the provider standing in front of you.

I explain the Bildungsgutschein in more detail in another post, which I’ll link here.

2. AVGS Career Coaching or Job Coaching

An AVGS can potentially be used to fund individual coaching to support you with your career or job search.

Depending on the coaching, this could include gaining clarity about your next career move, improving your job-search strategy, preparing applications and interviews, or figuring out what kind of work actually makes sense for you.

Again, I have a separate post explaining AVGS coaching and how it works in more detail, which I’ll link here.

And there is something important I want you to know before attending one of these events:

You can look for your own AVGS coach.

You do not have to simply choose a coach because their company happens to have a table at the Gruppentermin.

3. AVGS Gründungscoaching

If you are considering becoming self-employed or starting a business, you may also come across providers offering AVGS Gründungscoaching.

This type of coaching is focused on preparing for self-employment and developing your business idea and plans.

I also explain Gründungscoaching separately in more detail, so I’ll link that article here.

The same principle applies here: take your time before choosing who you want to work with.

Remember: These Providers Want You to Choose Them

There is one important thing to understand about the providers you meet at a Gruppentermin.

They are there because they want participants for their services.

Of course, they can give you useful information and answer your questions. But they may also try to convince you that their course, coaching, or program is the right option for you.

That doesn't mean you need to make a decision there and then.

Take their flyer.

Ask your questions.

Write down the name of the provider.

Then go home, visit their website, research what they offer, and think about whether it actually fits what you need.

You have time to compare your options.

This is particularly important with coaching. The person you work with matters, and the first provider who approaches you does not automatically have to become your provider.

Be Careful What You Sign

If you are interested in AVGS career coaching, job coaching, or Gründungscoaching, don’t feel pressured to sign something with a provider during the Gruppentermin.

The provider standing in front of you is not necessarily the provider—or coach—that is right for you.

And coaching is personal.

You are going to talk about your career, your struggles, your goals, your fears, and potentially some big decisions about your future.

Do you really want to be randomly assigned to someone without first finding out whether you actually want to work with that person?

My advice is to research your options first.

Find a coach whose approach fits you. Have a conversation with them. Ask questions. See whether you feel comfortable.

Then you can explore applying for the appropriate AVGS coaching.

What If You Don’t Speak German?

Most providers at these Gruppentermine will usually be German-speaking.

Some may be able to speak with you in English, but you shouldn’t assume that everyone will.

So think about what you actually need from the meeting.

If you want to have detailed conversations, ask questions, or get advice about your situation, bringing someone who can translate for you can be very helpful.

If, on the other hand, you mainly want to attend because you received an invitation and need your attendance registered, your experience may be much simpler.

You can arrive, make sure your attendance is checked, walk around the event for a little while, look at the different tables, and then leave when appropriate.

In that situation, you may decide that you don’t need a translator.

Go In Informed, Not Pressured

A Gruppentermin can look intimidating on paper, especially when you don’t know what is waiting for you.

But once you understand the format, it becomes much easier.

You may not meet your Berater at all.

You may see several different providers.

You can move around, ask questions, take flyers, and collect information.

And most importantly, you don’t have to choose a provider on the spot.

If you're already considering AVGS career coaching or AVGS Gründungscoaching, you can even do your research before your Gruppentermin.

That way, instead of walking into the room wondering which provider you should choose, you can arrive knowing that you have already found someone you would like to work with.

If you're considering AVGS coaching or Gründungscoaching, book a free consultation with me before your Gruppentermin. We can talk about your situation, what kind of support you're looking for, and whether working together could be a good fit.

Then you can go to your Gruppentermin already prepared, knowing that you have another provider in mind and don't need to make a rushed decision at one of the tables.
